Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies


The online Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies (BACS) was designed to develop expert communication skills and is ideal for the returning adult student. Through this program, students learn to better understand human interaction and can take their knowledge and expertise into their personal and professional lives in a wide variety of occupations and settings.

The degree requires 120 semester hours for graduation:

NKU general education requirements: 46-52 credit hours.
Minor or area of concentration: 12-24 credit hours.
Complete 45 hours at the 300-400 course level.

Students can begin the online program in any semester (fall, spring or summer) on a full or part-time basis. Students needing only the core curriculum can complete it in as little as 24 months by taking four courses (12 hours) each semester. Students needing additional hours in the general studies or elective areas may complete them concurrent to enrollment in the core curriculum, but the length of time to complete the program will depend on prior college work.

Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Leadership

 The online Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Leadership degree (BAOL) was designed to work with prior collegiate-level coursework to enable students the opportunity for advancement and/or provide the necessary skills for a supervisory position. The BAOL degree focuses on the "human side" of leadership and includes 45 hours of upper division coursework in four areas: leadership, communication, professional environment and an area of concentration.

The degree requires 120 semester hours for graduation:

    * 45 hours (15 courses) in the major core – Delivered online
    * 48 hours in general education – Available online
    * 35 hours of electives

Students can begin the online program in any semester (fall, spring or summer) on a full or part-time basis. Students needing only the core curriculum can complete it in as little as 18 months by taking four courses (12 hours) each semester. Students needing additional hours in the general studies or elective areas may complete them concurrent to enrollment in the core curriculum, but the length of time to complete the program will depend on prior college work.

Bachelor of Science Health Science

 The online Bachelor of Science in Health Science (BHS) is an interdisciplinary program that provides the opportunity for associate-prepared allied health professionals to improve their career mobility by enhancing their knowledge and skills. In addition to promoting the 'team concept' in health care, the curriculum prepares graduates for a variety of positions in healthcare administration, management, and advanced clinical practice.
The degree requires a minimum of 128 semester hours for graduation, including:

    * 30 hours in the major coursework
    * At least 45 hours of upper division coursework
    * Completion of general-studies curriculum Students may begin the online program in any semester (fall, spring or summer) on a full- or part-time basis.

The major coursework can be completed in as little as 16 months. Students needing additional hours in the general studies or upper-division elective areas may complete them concurrent to enrollment in the BHS curriculum. The total length of time to complete the degree will depend on prior college work.

The Bachelor of Science in Health Science degree is open to any health care professional with an associate degree in an allied health field such as respiratory care or radiologic technology. To apply for admission, please follow the steps below.

2. Submit official transcripts from all institutions previously attended to: NKU, Office of Admissions, Nunn Drive - AC 400, Highland Heights, KY 41099. You are responsible for contacting all previous colleges attended to request that an official transcript be sent to NKU. Most universities require this request to be in writing; please confirm that your records have been received at NKU. A minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 on a 4.0 is required, and students must also have earned the grade of "C" or better in life science courses.

3.Document proof of professional certification by submitting a copy of your credentials to the BHS program. This may be done via fax to (859) 572-1314.

RN to BSN Program

The Online RN-BSN completion degree provides career mobility for the registered nurse who needs the high flexibility that a distance learning program can provide. A substantial background in the liberal arts is an integral part of preparation for professional nursing and the upper-division curriculum blends scientific and humanistic theories with nursing theories to provide graduates with a foundation for professional nursing practice.

The online program can be completed on a full or part-time basis and the rotation begins each fall. Full-time students can complete the major core requirements in less than 18 months taking 4 courses (12 hours) each semester.

Applicants must be a graduate of an Associate Degree or Diploma Nursing program and hold current R.N. licensure of state in which student resides. Students must also provide additional proof of licensure for the state in which the student is completing practicum requirements if different than the state of residence.

Certificate in Business Informatics


 What is Business Informatics? It's the application of computer technology to the world of business. Organizations use and value information as a business asset, and seek qualified people who understand and can manage business information in the areas of marketing and promotions, finance and accounting, or the business operations. Career opportunities for people with a certificate in Business Informatics include working with databases, e-commerce, and project management.

The online certificate in BIS at NKU requires the four courses (12 semester hours) listed below. Students may begin the certificate program in spring, summer or fall semesters.

BIS105 Introduction to Business Computing:

Application of computer hardware, software, and computing techniques to common business problems and activities;  microcomputers and business productivity packages including word processors, spreadsheets, databases, and other systems and applications software; extensive hands- on work in a graphical user environment.

INF110 Business Programming:

Strategies, techniques, and tools for professional programming in a business environment. The student will learn advanced programming topics in Excel, Word and Access. PREREQ: College-level mathematics course or equivalent.

INF282 Introduction to Databases:

Core concepts for the design, creation, and manipulation of relational databases. Analysis of data requirements, conceptual modeling, definition of the relational model, relational database design and normalization, and database implementation; manipulation of relational databases using relational algebra with SQL. PREREQ: INF110 or permission of instructor.

BIS300 Management Information Systems:

Principles of MIS designed to introduce students to the  fundamentals of Management Information Systems and to apply problem-solving skills in Excel, Access, and Web development. PREREQ: Demonstrated competency in Word, Excel and PowerPoint (e.g., completion of BIS105) or permission of instructor.

Post-Bachelor Certificate in Entrepreneurship

Are you driven by an idea or the rewards of building an entrepreneurship organization? The Post-Baccalaureate Certificate combined with your prior degree and experience will provide you with the skills necessary to launch and build a successful venture or to succeed in any career.

This program is open to adult learners who have earned a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution. The 15 hour sequence begins each spring (January) and can be completed in 12 months on a part-time basis, taking one class at a time in eight week sessions. The course sequence is as follows:

Graduate

Master of Arts in Education

If your passion is teaching and you are ready to advance your career to the next level through the Master of Arts in Education Degree, Northern Kentucky University offers an ideal program for you.

The MAEd program at NKU is designed to help certified teachers improve effectiveness as documented through learning outcomes and test performance. The program is responsive to the needs of individual teachers and school districts, and provides opportunities for students to craft projects that directly impact their specific classroom challenges.

The online format allows in-state, out-of-state, and international students to complete the curriculum from the convenience of their home computers via the Internet. The curriculum has been developed for online delivery by seasoned, full-time faculty members from NKU’s College of Education and Human Services. Students can complete the 30-credit-hour program in five semesters (about 20 months).

The online MAEd program allows the working professional to complete the degree within 20 months by taking six to nine credit hours each semester. Full-time enrollment is also available for students who want to complete the program sooner. Students may enter the program two times per year in the fall, spring or summer semester.

The curriculum requires 15 credit hours in the Professional Core. Students also select a 12 credit-hour content specialization. Currently, NKU offers a specialization in Gifted and Talented Education and English in an online format. Other online options for content specializations are under development. Upon approval from the College of Education, students may transfer 12 hours from another regionally accredited university to fulfill the content specialization. One elective course rounds out the degree requirements.

Master Degree in Integrative Studies

 The online Master Degree in Integrative Studies provides a flexible, interdisciplinary program for students seeking intellectual growth or professional advancement. Students work with an advisor to design a program that meets their specific academic, career and professional goals. Integrative Studies is also ideal for educators who are seeking a rank change or credentialing to teach at the college level.

The degree requires a minimum of 33 semester hours, including:

    * MALS 601 Introduction to Graduate Research and Writing
    * 24 hours of electives in at least two disciplines
    * Master's candidates who wish to teach at the college level must complete 18 hours in a single discipline
    * MALS 697 Thesis or Project

A wide range of courses are available in the online format from subjects including English, literature, history, and social studies.

 Students seeking admission to the Master of Arts in Integrative Studies program must complete the following admission requirements:\

3. Submit two letters of reference and a copy of your resume.
  
4. Complete a letter of intent stating your academic goals and proposed area of interest in the program. Your letter should be between 500 and 1,000 words.


Master of Arts in Instructional Leadership

If your passion is teaching and you want to advance your career to become a principal or supervisor, then the Master of Arts in Instructional Leadership (MA-IL) at Northern Kentucky University is an ideal program for you.

The MA-IL program at NKU will prepare you for an administrative principal position in elementary through secondary schools and provide in-service opportunities for administrators who want to improve their professional competence. The MAIL program prepares students to sit for the principal licensure exam in Kentucky. Check with your state certification policy outside of Kentucky.

The online MA-IL program allows the working professional to complete the 33 credit hour degree within 16 months by taking six credit hours in the fall and spring semesters and nine to twelve in the summer term. Full-time enrollment is also available for students who want to complete the program sooner. Students may enter the program in the summer semester.

If you are a certified teacher with one year of teaching experience and are interested in applying for admission to the MA-IL program, please follow the steps below.

   3. Submit a written essay and 3 letters of professional recommendation (i.e. principal, supervisor, superintendent or other teachers).

Master of Science in Nursing

NKU offers several online degree and certificate programs at the masters and post-masters level.

Master of Science in Nursing
This program equips professional nurses to assume advanced leadership and clinical positions in a health-care facility. Tracks include Administration, Education and Nurse Practitioner.

Post-Masters Certification
Post-master’s certification programs are available to students who have an earned an MSN degree and seek specialized knowledge and skills as a nurse practitioner or nurse administrator.

Nurse Practitioner Advancement
These online courses allow opportunities for nurse practitioners to gain an additional specialty focus such as Adult to Family Nurse Practitioner, or Women's Health to Adult Practitioner.

Endorsement in Gifted &Talented Education

 The Endorsement as Teacher for Gifted Education program at NKU is designed to help certified educators earn licensure in gifted and talented education. The four-course sequence may also be used as the specialization of the Masters of Arts, the Fifth-Year Program, or the Professional Area of the Rank 1.

The curriculum is based on the Kentucky Experienced Teacher Standards, Standards for Gifted Education developed by the Council for Exceptional Children with additional requirements deemed appropriate by the graduate faculty at NKU. The endorsement can be completed part-time within 12 months in an online format. The course sequence is as follows:
